The Los Angeles Chargers used the 22nd overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on Akheem Mesidor, a move that directly addressed their need for another pass rusher after Odafe Oweh left for the Washington Commanders. Los Angeles went with an edge rusher in the first round because the position had become too thin to ignore.
Mesidor arrives from the University of Miami with the physical profile and polished pass-rushing skill set to make an immediate impact on the Chargers defense as a rookie. He also has the alignment versatility to slide inside when needed, and the power to capitalize on the lanes that open in three-edge-rusher sets. That kind of flexibility matters for a defense that can pair him with Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu.
The need was obvious after Oweh’s one season in Los Angeles. Acquired in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens, he delivered 7.5 sacks across 12 games in 2025 before signing a four-year, $96 million deal with Washington after the season. Losing that production created a hole the Chargers had to address early, and Mesidor is the first answer they have given.
There is still a catch. Even with Mesidor in place, there has been speculation since the draft about whether Los Angeles will add another pass rusher through trade or free agency. That uncertainty is tied in part to reasonable concerns about Mesidor’s injury history, and to the fact that he will be 25 by the start of his rookie season. The Chargers have made their move, but they have not closed the door on making another one.
For now, though, the draft pick signals where the team believes the immediate fix starts. Mesidor was brought in to help, and the Chargers are betting he can do that quickly.
