Detroit will play its international game in Munich, Germany, on Sunday, Nov. 15, giving the Lions a Week 10 trip to FC Bayern Munich Stadium before the season turns toward Thanksgiving. The rest of the NFL schedule is due Thursday night, but the league plans to reveal the remaining international opponents Wednesday at 9 a.m. on NFL Network.

The matchup adds another overseas assignment to a franchise that has already twice crossed the Atlantic for games in London. Rod Wood said at the NFL's annual league meetings in March that he believed it was unlikely the Lions would get a bye week the week right after the international game, and it is still unclear whether Detroit will get that relief before facing its annual home Thanksgiving Day Game on Nov. 26 in Week 12.

That timing matters because the Lions could be asked to handle a long trip, then turn quickly into one of the league's most familiar short weeks. The Thanksgiving date is already set, and the gap between Nov. 15 and Nov. 26 leaves little room for a reset if the schedule does not provide a bye.

Detroit has seen both sides of the international experience. The Lions beat the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 26, 2014, at Wembley Stadium in London after Matt Prater made a 48-yard field goal as time expired, but they were routed by the Kansas City Chiefs 45-10 on Nov. 1, 2015, also at Wembley. Those are the only two previous international games in franchise history, and both came in England rather than Germany.

The new Munich game is part of a triple-header on Fox, making the announcement a meaningful preview of how the network's broadcast window will unfold that day. For the Lions, the bigger question is not only who they will face in Munich, but whether the schedule makers give them a manageable path back to Detroit before the Thanksgiving stage is set.
