Elena Rybakina ended Alex Eala’s Italian Open run on Sunday evening Philippine time, beating the 20-year-old 4-6, 3-6 in the Round of 32. The straight-set score did not tell the full story of a match that stayed tight deep into both sets.

Eala had to work for everything in the opening game, needing 11 points to hold serve before Rybakina broke in the third game of the set in a 13-point battle. From the fifth through the tenth game, both players held serve, but Rybakina still carried the sharper edge, hitting four aces in the opening set to Eala’s one while the Filipino also had three double faults in the match.

The second set began with more trouble for Eala when Rybakina struck first with an early break. Eala answered immediately for her first break of the match, then moved ahead 2-1 after backing it up with a hold, but Rybakina steadied from there and finished the job. By the end, Rybakina had won 47% of return points, while Eala finished with a 67% first-serve percentage and Rybakina with 62%.

The loss dropped Eala’s record against top 10 opponents to 3-4. The 20-year-old now moves on to the Strasbourg Grand Prix, where she is listed as a qualifier and will use it as her final tune-up before the French Open. For Rybakina, the win fit the form of a player ranked world number two, seeded second in the draw, and already a reigning Australian Open champion and former Wimbledon champion.
