Kimberly Anne Mathers, Eminem's ex-wife, pleaded no contest Monday to impaired driving and failure to report an accident after police said she was driving a Range Rover while impaired on Feb. 16 and crashed into a parked Dodge Ram pickup truck.
Investigators said the truck was pushed about 50 feet from where it had been parked. Mathers, 51, of Chesterfield Township, is scheduled for sentencing in Macomb County District Court on June 17.
Macomb County prosecutors said operating impaired carries a 93-day misdemeanor penalty and failure to report an accident is a 90-day misdemeanor, and that those are the maximum charges available under the law based on the evidence. Mathers was arraigned on the same charges and entered her no contest plea immediately.
The case lands against a difficult backdrop for Mathers. In October 2015, she was involved in a one-car crash at 23 Mile and Card roads in Macomb County, when her SUV struck a utility pole and landed upside down in a ditch. In May 2016, she told the Mojo in the Morning radio show that she was attempting suicide in that crash. She also said she has been clean for 10 years, struggles with living in the public eye and has suffered from depression after discovering her twin sister dead from an alleged drug overdose in a Warren trailer park.
That history gives Monday's plea a sharper edge: prosecutors say the evidence supports the most serious charges available, while Mathers now faces sentencing for a second impaired-driving case that follows a prior crash she herself linked to a suicide attempt. The next date that matters is June 17, when a Macomb County judge will decide what comes of it.
