Kelly Ripa and her family marked Mother's Day with a McDonald's dinner, a rare move she said had not happened in years and years. The host talked about the meal on the May 11 episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, where she and Mark Consuelos walked through how the fast-food plan came together.
Ripa said two of her three kids were home for the holiday, and the idea came from her youngest son, Joaquin. While backstage at his Broadway show Death of a Salesman, Joaquin texted his mother with a suggestion that turned into dinner. Ripa said he told her, “I thought it would be fun if we had McDonald's for your birthday,” before she reminded him, “it's not my birthday,” and he clarified, “Mother's Day, you know what I mean!”
By the end of the night, the family was all in. Ripa said, “And so we had McDonald's!” and added that she had a Big Mac and large fries. Consuelos confirmed the dinner and joined in on the joke, saying, “I have to say, the Quarter Pounder, I have to weigh that. I'm not sure it's a Quarter Pounder,” after Ripa noted, “Also, the Big Mac seems small too.” He replied, “Maybe we're just bigger now,” and she agreed that maybe they were bigger and it used to seem bigger.
The exchange mattered because it landed as both a family anecdote and a small snapshot of how the holiday was spent in a home where even a fast-food run can become a story. Ripa said the meal was delicious and that she had the best time, then mimicked tossing something away while talking about cleanup, a comic end to a night that she described as unusual and fun.
For Ripa, the surprise was not that the family ate McDonald's, but that they had done it at all after so many years. Joaquin's text from backstage set it in motion, and the holiday dinner wound up sounding less like a routine meal than a break from one.
