Detroit Lions' Derrick Moore earns praise as ideal rookie fit

The are getting an early look at , and already has the rookie edge rusher on its list of best fits and perfect landing spots. Moore, whom the Lions drafted in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft after trading up with the New York Jets to pick No. 44, is part of the team’s voluntary offseason workouts as it builds toward the 2026 season.

Moore gave 10 sacks in 2025 and finished with 10.5 tackles for loss, 30 total tackles, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He is 6-foot-3 and 255 pounds and comes from Baltimore, Md.

That production helped drive the evaluation from , who called Moore the best speed-to-power rusher in the class and said he walked offensive tackles back into the pocket on tape. Bowen said Moore fits Detroit because the Lions needed a physical rusher opposite , and he pointed to third downs as the rookie’s likely early value as a designated rusher out of sub-sets. Bowen also said Moore can create immediately in one-on-one situations when Hutchinson draws protection slides and chips.

The timing matters because Detroit’s offseason program is moving quickly. The Lions will hold organized team activities at the end of May and into the first weeks of June, then follow with mandatory minicamp on June 16-17 before training camp opens from the Meijer Performance Center in late July. For a defense that is trying to add another edge presence, Moore’s first months in the building will help show whether the draft-day bet turns into a fast role on Sundays.

The fit looks clean on paper, but the real test will come when the speed of the NFL meets the strength that made Moore stand out in college. Detroit did not trade up for a developmental project; it moved to No. 44 for a player it believes can help pressure quarterbacks now.
