The Mets are calling up top outfield prospect A.J. Ewing, and the 21-year-old should make his big league debut tomorrow when New York welcomes Jack Flaherty and the Tigers to Citi Field.
Will Sammon of The Athletic reported the promotion, and the move will force the Mets to create space on both the active roster and the 40-man roster before Ewing can join the club. The call-up gives New York another look at a player it has tracked closely since the 2023 draft, when it used the #134 overall pick on him and signed him away from a commitment to Alabama with a $675K bonus.
The timing matters because the Mets need help in the lineup. Their offense ranks 29th in MLB in scoring, and Ewing has been one of the organization’s fastest risers. He opened this season in Double-A, moved to Triple-A Syracuse on April 27, and is being promoted after 12 games at the top minor league level.
Ewing’s production has matched the climb. He has hit.290 with an on-base percentage close to.400 over parts of four minor league seasons, and this year he has put up a.339/.447/.514 line over 132 plate appearances between the top two levels. He has walked nearly 17% of the time, struck out 15.2% of the time and gone 17-for-18 in stolen base attempts. He also stole 70 bases last year on his way from Low-A to Double-A.
The Mets drafted Ewing as a second baseman, but he moved primarily to the outfield in 2024 and is now mostly a center fielder. He has made four starts at second base this year as well. That versatility gives New York another option after it placed Luis Robert Jr. on the injured list in late April with a disc herniation, then split center field between Tyrone Taylor and Carson Benge while MJ Melendez has drawn into the lineup in right field.
There is also real belief in the bat. Baseball America ranked Ewing as the No. 33 prospect in the game, while MLB Pipeline puts him 78th overall and second in the Mets’ system behind Jonah Tong. He has 15 professional home runs, including five since the start of the 2025 season. The next step comes quickly: if the roster moves are completed, Ewing will be in position to take the field at Citi Field tomorrow and begin the test that has been building since draft day.
