Lane Kiffin is already talking about the difference between Oxford and Baton Rouge, and Ole Miss is not far from his mind. In a Vanity Fair interview, the LSU coach said recruiting families in Mississippi could be an uphill fight because of objections tied to the community, while Baton Rouge did not bring the same response.

Kiffin said one family member told him, “Hey, coach, we really like you. But my grandparents aren’t letting me move to Oxford, Mississippi.” He added, “That doesn’t come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana.” He also said parents told the reporter that the campus’s diversity feels so strong that “it feels like there is no segregation,” adding, “And we want that for our kid because that’s the real world.”

The comments land as part of the fallout from Kiffin’s departure from Ole Miss to become the next head coach of LSU. He was introduced at Tiger Stadium, and the move has kept his old school and new one tied together even before the teams meet on Sept. 19 to open SEC conference play. Kiffin also had tried to persuade Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter to let him coach the Rebels in the CFP, a push that did not change the outcome.

The backdrop is what gives his remarks weight. Kiffin’s exit from Oxford still bothers him, and his interview places recruiting and race in the same frame as he compares two places that will be linked again on the field in just weeks. He said, “I just hope (comments) comes across respectful to Ole Miss... There are some things that I’m saying that are factual, they’re not shots,” but the timing ensures the words will be read as more than simple reflection.

For Ole Miss, the issue is not just what Kiffin said, but when he said it. With the Rebels and LSU scheduled to play on Sept. 19, every word about Oxford and Baton Rouge now sits inside a rivalry that has become personal as well as competitive.
