Uw Student Death: 19-Year-Old Woman Stabbed in UW-Area Laundry Room

are searching for a suspect after a 19-year-old student was stabbed to death Sunday night inside a laundry room at an off-campus housing complex near campus. Officers found the victim dead at the scene shortly after 10 p.m. at the Nordheim Court Apartments on 25th Avenue Northeast.

Police identified the victim as a 19-year-old transgender woman. On Monday, investigators said the suspect remains at large and should be considered armed and dangerous.

Detectives described the suspect as a Black man, about 5′6″ or 5′7″ with a slim build, black hair and a beard. He was last seen wearing a button-up shirt, a dark blue vest and blue jeans. Police said they do not believe he is a University of Washington student.

Authorities are reviewing surveillance video and trying to determine whether the killing was a targeted attack or a random act of violence. The university said the victim’s family has been notified, but officials have not publicly released her identity.

The killing has rattled a campus community that sits just beyond the apartment complex where it happened, and police are still left with the central question that drives the case: who the suspect is and why he attacked. University officials urged students to remain alert and travel in groups, particularly after dark, while police asked anyone with information to contact the homicide unit.
