Amazon’s Prime Video has ordered a series based on Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing, ending a long development stretch for one of the most closely watched fantasy adaptations in TV. Michael B. Jordan announced the pickup Monday at the end of Amazon’s upfront presentation to advertisers at the Beacon Theatre in New York.
The series is built around Basgiath War College, where the rule is simple: graduate or die. At the center is Violet Sorrengail, 20, who is sent to join candidates training to become dragon riders in a world that has already turned Yarros’ books into a publishing phenomenon.
The first novel, Fourth Wing, arrived in May 2023, followed by Iron Flame in November 2023 and Onyx Storm in January 2025. The planned fourth and fifth books have not yet been announced by title or release date, leaving the adaptation to catch up with a story that is still expanding on the page.
That pace helps explain why the television project took time to move. The series first went into development in October 2023, and it was stalled until last September, when Meredith Averill joined as showrunner. Lisa Joy will direct the first episode, giving the production a pair of established names as it moves from development into a formal series order.
Prime Video has been building a slate of big franchise bets, and the new order comes as the platform continues to lean on recognizable names to drive interest. A separate Prime Video project, Jack Ryan Ghost War, has already set John Krasinski’s return for 2026, while Reacher Season 5 Announcement Lands Before Season 4 Debut on Prime Video showed how aggressively the service is moving on established properties.
Rebecca Yarros said she was thrilled to be working with what she called a dedicated, experienced team and grateful for its passion for both the books and the readership behind them. Peter Friedlander, in a separate statement, said Violet’s journey had sparked a global phenomenon and built an intensely passionate fanbase around the world, the characters and the emotional stakes. He added that Yarros’ series is one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world and that Meredith Averill and partners at Kilter, Outlier and Premeditated are bringing it to life in a way that honors what fans love about the story.
The order gives Amazon a clear path for a series that has been waiting on the right combination of timing and creative leadership. The unanswered question now is how fast Prime Video can turn a fast-growing fantasy franchise into a finished show before the book series widens even further.
