Luke Bryan hit the American Idol season 24 finale on May 11 with both jobs in hand: he judged the show and performed on it. He sang his latest single, “Fish Hunt Golf Drink,” and later joined Julián Kalel for a cover of Dwight Yoakam’s “A Thousand Miles From Nowhere.”
The finale put Bryan in the middle of a packed night that mixed the competition’s last push with performances from judges, finalists, guest mentor Alicia Keys and outside artists. Bryan was also set to team up with Lionel Richie and Carrie Underwood for “Deep River Woman,” while Underwood was scheduled to appear with Mötley Crüe and other acts including Brad Paisley, Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms, Cameron Whitcomb, Clay Aiken, En Vogue, Nelly and Shinedown were on the bill.
Kalel’s appearance gave the duet a backstory that stretched beyond one night. He first turned up on season 23, reached Hollywood Week, then removed himself from the competition amid mental health challenges. He came back the following season and made it to the Top 14, turning his return into one of the finale’s more meaningful moments.
The voting stakes were also still live while the stage was packed with names. Viewers could cast up to 10 votes per finalist, per voting method, as the season 24 finalists played for the finish. Alicia Keys was the guest mentor for the finale, and she performed once with all three finalists and once on her own.
Bryan’s role on May 11 showed how the finale was built to do more than crown a winner. It was also a showcase, and he was part of it twice over: as a judge and as a performer sharing the stage with a contestant whose comeback made the song land harder.
