Ashley Mcbryde’s fifth studio album opens the door to her story with “Rattlesnake Preacher,” a song she had already hit resistance trying to record. This week, in a New Music Friday country album roundup, the release was taken as McBryde’s first full insight into the person behind the songs.

The record leans into the sound that has always marked her work: Arkansas delta blues, classic country and a modern country-rock edge. That mix runs through songs including “What If We Don't,” “Hand Me Downs,” “Bottle Tells Me So” and “Behind Bars,” before the album closes with “Ten To Midnight.”

The weight of the album is in how directly it turns personal history into music. “Behind Bars,” written by Jeff Hyde, Jessi Alexander and Jon Randall, references McBryde’s experience with alcoholism, and the review described the album as emotionally revealing. Holler’s view was blunt: “McBryde lays her soul bare with the strength and depth that many fear to share.”

That matters because McBryde has not always been able to tell this part of herself so openly. The resistance she faced trying to record “Rattlesnake Preacher” shows how much of this album had to fight its way into the light, which gives the opening track a different kind of force: it is not just an introduction, but a statement of intent.
