Hayden Panettiere says she was 18 when she was led onto a boat, taken into a small room and placed in a bed next to an undressed very famous man, an encounter she described as frightening and deeply unsettling. She discussed the episode on the Monday, May 11 edition of Jay Shetty’s podcast, On Purpose with Jay Shetty.
Panettiere said the experience changed the moment she realized she was in danger. By then, she said, she was “quite literally out to sea,” with no way to jump off and swim away. She said there had been no warning signs, and that the person who brought her into the situation was someone she had come to trust and view as a protector.
The actress said she had believed at the time that she was capable of making healthy, safe decisions, but now sees how vulnerable she was at 18. “The fact that I was 18, even though I’d lived such a huge life and I thought I was oh so mature at 18 … scientifically, your frontal lobes don’t develop until we’re what, 25, 26?” she said, adding that she was not fully aware of what was happening around her.
That gap between confidence and vulnerability is the center of the story Panettiere is telling in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, due out May 19. The chapter she described does not name the man involved, but Panettiere said the betrayal cut especially deep because it came from someone she had trusted and believed had her back.
She said her reaction was immediate. “That lion in me, that fire in me … my hair stood on end and I became ferocious,” Panettiere said. “This is not happening.” She said she fled the room and tried to hide elsewhere on the boat, a response that fit the survival mode she said kicked in the second she understood the danger.
The account lands just days before the memoir’s release, giving Panettiere’s remarks immediate weight and shifting them from recollection to public accusation without a named target. For readers, the unanswered question is not whether she remembers the episode clearly; it is who, exactly, the book identifies and how widely the industry will have to reckon with what she says happened aboard that boat.
