City Point Ice Cream and Burgers won a burger poll comparing Petersburg and Hopewell spots, taking more than 38% of the vote after a recent move into Hopewell’s Downtown Historic District. The restaurant, open since September 2022, now serves customers from the repurposed Broadway Motor Company building at 238 E. Broadway.
The result gives Philip Hughes and Lexi Hughes a boost just as the business settles into its new home. City Point’s burgers run from $7.99 to $19.75, with 4-ounce smash burgers offered in single, double or triple sizes and 8-ounce steakhouse burgers sold as single, double or monster sizes. Specialty burgers cost $10.75 to $13.75 and include the Double Bacon Cheeseburger, Tennessee Burger, Hawaiian Burger, Breakfast Burger, Philly Burger and Impossible Burger.
The move also matters because the restaurant is not finished changing. A spacious adjoining patio is set to open soon for al fresco dining, adding another draw for a place that already built a following quickly after launching in September 2022. For Hopewell, the win puts a newly relocated business on the map at a time when it is still shaping its identity in the downtown district.
The poll also put a spotlight on other burger stops in Petersburg. Big Mike's Burger Shoppe at 2870 County Dr. serves a one-pound burger, while The Brickhouse Run at 409 Cockade Alley makes the Petersburger with sharp cheddar, bacon, onion jam, lettuce and pub sauce. OldTowne Perks at 404 A N. Sycamore St. lists 10 smash burgers, and Maria's Old Town 21 Ristorante Italiano at 21 W. Old St. serves Burger 21 with eight ounces of fresh ground chuck, grilled onions, bacon, mushrooms, provolone and balsamic glaze.
City Point also stands apart for one more reason: the City Point Challenge. Anyone who can finish a 48-ounce burger, two loaded hotdogs, a tray of fries and a milkshake in 40 minutes gets a test of appetite that matches the size of the restaurant’s ambitions. For now, the reader vote says the newly relocated Hopewell shop is the burger to beat.
