Leeds United travel to Tottenham Hotspur this evening with their Premier League safety already secured and West Ham United left relying on events in North London. West Ham’s defeat to Arsenal on Sunday meant Leeds were mathematically safe from relegation, and tonight’s game now has a different kind of edge.
One win could still change the shape of Leeds’ season. A 3-0 victory would lift them to 13th and could trigger bonus payments for the squad if they climb the table. Before the campaign began, Leeds were being talked about as one of the newly promoted sides likely to go straight back down, but they have now joined Sunderland in breaking that pattern.
Gary Neville said after Sunday’s finish at the London Stadium that Tottenham could effectively settle West Ham’s fate if they beat Leeds, and he was struck by the possibility that the Yorkshire side might turn up in a looser frame of mind. “Tomorrow night, Leeds might be free as a bird and play beautifully,” he said on his podcast, adding that they had shown against Manchester United that they “got it in them.”
Neville also said he would be glad to see “two different clubs” go down this year, arguing that Leeds and Sunderland staying up was a welcome break from what he called the “rot” of the same teams dropping back into trouble. He said Leeds could go to bed on Sunday and “sigh” with relief after becoming safe, but added that the natural question is whether a team under no pressure can still show the same edge it had when the fight was on. “I’m not accusing the Leeds players of stepping off it,” he said, “but those things naturally do happen.”
Leeds’ season has already delivered more than survival. They also reached an FA Cup semi-final, and they beat Bristol City 4-0 before clinching the league title on the final day after winning promotion last season. What remains now is whether they finish with a surge or with the quiet drift that often follows the moment a target is no longer in sight.
