Bedford News: Man shot dead after overnight police stand-off in Bedford

A man in his 40s was shot dead by armed police in Bedford on Tuesday morning after barricading himself inside a home overnight and making threats, following reports of vehicles being damaged on Aylesbury Road late on Monday. Officers fired shortly after 9.30am after, police said, the man presented a weapon.

Bedfordshire police said the call came in at about 10.40pm on Monday, when officers were sent to reports of damaged vehicles in Aylesbury Road. They found a man inside a property who had blockaded himself in, and armed officers, negotiators and other emergency services were brought in as the confrontation stretched into the morning. Nearby residents were evacuated while the incident was ongoing.

The force said it spent several hours trying to engage with him and bring the situation to a safe end. In a statement, police said: “despite sustained efforts over a number of hours to engage with the man and bring the incident to a safe resolution … he presented a weapon before police fired.” Officers and medical professionals gave immediate advanced first aid at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead shortly before 10.30am.

The death has now been referred to the , which has opened an investigation, as required after a police shooting. Bedfordshire police said residents are being supported to return to their homes and that there is not believed to be any ongoing risk to the public. A pathologist will carry out a postmortem examination to determine the cause of death, and the has been informed.

The man has not been named. What began as a late-night call about damaged vehicles turned into a prolonged that ended only when police used lethal force, and the IOPC inquiry will now examine exactly how that final moment unfolded.
