Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating a fatal crash in West Park after a Tesla Model Y and a Honda Accord collided on Pembroke Road near Southwest 46th Avenue late Saturday night.
Mathis Frederick was driving eastbound in a 2022 Tesla Model Y at about 10:18 p.m. on May 9, 2026, when Breyon Sampson, driving westbound in a 2018 Honda Accord, attempted to make a left turn southbound onto Southwest 46th Avenue. Investigators said the Tesla struck the Honda in a T-bone collision that was so severe it caused the Honda to split in half.
The crash drew Broward Sheriff deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue to the scene, and Frederick, Sampson and five passengers were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment. Edger Surles was later pronounced deceased. Officials said the injuries to Frederick, Sampson and the other passengers were not life-threatening.
The case now sits with BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit, which will determine the sequence of events that led to a collision that turned a routine turn on a busy road into a fatal wreck. For the people in the cars that night, the next step is not speculation but an investigation that already has one death at its center.
