Katy Perry turned Josh Groban’s engagement news into a small, comic spectacle on Monday, posting a TikTok in a white bathrobe, pouring herself a full glass of what appeared to be Champagne and jokingly crying as her 2011 song “The One That Got Away” played underneath.
She sealed the moment with a one-word caption: “congrats,” followed by a champagne emoji.
The post landed with a little more weight than a routine celebrity gag because Perry once dated Groban briefly in 2009, and the song playing in the background has long been tied to him. Perry, 41, is now dating former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, while Groban, 45, was engaged to British actress Natalie McQueen. The TikTok turned a personal milestone for Groban into a reminder of a past connection that has lingered in pop culture for more than a decade.
That backstory matters because Perry later confirmed during a 2017 livestream, while promoting her “Witness” album, that Groban inspired “The One That Got Away.” Groban said the revelation was news to him when he was asked about it on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” where he said the pair split because they were both very private and decided they were better as friends. He added that they had remained very good friends to this day and said of Perry, “She’s the best.”
Groban also said he was caught off guard by Perry’s claim. “I was not expecting that. That was a double take and a spit of my coffee when I saw that,” he said, later adding that he was “very flattered” but also “very surprised” because the song’s lyrics did not quite line up with his life. “It’s very sweet of her to say that. And then I listened to the lyrics of the song. And I’m like, ‘I never owned a Mustang. I don’t have a tattoo. Are you sure that’s about me?’” he said.
What makes Monday’s TikTok work is that it does not pretend to be solemn. Perry did not issue a formal statement or ignore the news; she leaned into the old story, made herself the joke and kept the tone light. That is also why the clip resonated so easily: it pulled together the engagement, the breakup history and the song in one fast, readable moment.
For Groban, the reaction closes the loop on a rumor that has followed both singers for years. Perry’s joke answered the only question that mattered here: there was no bitterness, only a playful nod to an old relationship and a song that still has a second life every time the story comes back up.
