The San Francisco Giants activated Harrison Bader off the 10-Day Injured List on Monday afternoon, bringing the outfielder back after six rehab games with Sacramento as the club opened a road trip in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. To make room, the Giants also called up right-handed reliever Tristan Beck and optioned Dylan Smith and Logan Porter to AAA Sacramento.
Bader’s return comes after a difficult stretch at the plate before he landed on the injured list, when he went 6-for-52 with one home run, one double, two walks and 17 strikeouts. In his rehab assignment, he was 4-for-18 with two home runs, three walks, five strikeouts and one stolen base, a line that at least gave the Giants reason to believe he could help an offense that has been looking for more steady production.
The roster move also reflects the strain of a taxing weekend series, when the bullpen was heavily used and the Giants needed another arm. Beck is being brought up for the first time this season after appearing in 31 Major League games a year ago. He posted a 5.40 ERA and a 3.15 FIP in AAA this year, and his return gives San Francisco a fresh right-handed option as it turns to one of its biggest divisional tests.
Smith’s brief stay ended after one appearance for the Giants, in which he recorded two outs and walked one batter. Porter’s stint was even shorter; he appeared only as a pinch runner, and his option to Sacramento leaves the Giants back down to two catchers. For Bader, the immediate question is whether the rest from the injured list and the work in Sacramento are enough to reset his bat at a time when every spot in the lineup matters.
