Japan has fined and suspended him as head coach for abusing match officials during an under-23 tour of Australia last month. The 66-year-old has been stood down for six weeks and barred from any role in the ’ next four matches.

The ban will keep Jones out of Japan’s opening match against Italy on 4 July, two matches against a Hong Kong China Select side and a warm-up fixture with the . The also imposed a salary reduction, saying the seriousness of the matter and the contents of Jones’ contract led to the punishment.

Jones said he accepted the sanction and deeply regretted his behaviour. “Some inappropriate remarks that I made caused discomfort to local match officials and other related parties,” he said. “I would like to offer my sincere apologies to everyone involved.”

The punishment lands only weeks after Japan’s under-23 side returned from Australia with three wins from four games, finishing the tour with a 38-21 victory over Jones’ old Sydney club side . It also adds another sharp chapter to a coaching career that has often drawn headlines as much for confrontation as for results.

Jones oversaw the ’ pool-stage exit at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, and in 2022 he was twice involved in angry exchanges with fans in Sydney after a series-clinching win over Australia. This time, the issue is not a touchline outburst but the damage done to the game’s officials, and the JRFU has made clear it considered both the seriousness of the abuse and the terms of his contract before acting.

The suspension now leaves Japan to move into its international schedule without its head coach in place for one of the year’s earliest tests. What follows will show whether the Brave Blossoms can keep their momentum while their most recognisable figure serves the punishment handed down in public.
